Where the Heck Did You Come From?

Jesus said, "If some say to you, 'Where did you come from?' say to them, 'We have come from the light, from the place where the light came into being by its own power, established itself, and appeared in our image.'  If they then say to you, 'Is this light, you?' say, 'We are its children, and we are the chosen of the living Father.'  Gospel of Thomas 50

It is funny that I have read the Gospel of Thomas numerous times, and have not really meditated on this saying.  And yet in this saying is a central teaching of Gnosticism.  It seeks to answer the spiritual question people ask themselves all around the world.  "Where did I come from?"  "Why am I here?"  We ask ourselves.  Jesus the teacher teaches his students the answer to that question.   Our source is in the light.  We may call this light God or the Godhead, though in a way this light is beyond words or personalization.  The verse comes to mind from the Gospel of John where it speaks of the light that illumines all humanity.  This light like the sun, does not discriminate.  It shines on and in all of us.  We came from this light, we emmanated from it.  Our truest self shares the nature of this light.  In calling us children of the light is a reminder that we share the nature of our parent..the light.  Those who awaken to who they are-who see that of the light in all humanity and all creation these are what Jesus calls the chosen of the living Father, what we might call awakened or enlightened.  This is our knowing, our gnosis.
