Shhh! The Dead Are Taking A Nap!

Jesus' disciples asked him, "When will the final rest for the dead happen, and when will the new world come?" He said to them, "What you are looking forward to has already come, but you don't realize it."  Gospel of Thomas 51

The disciples in this passage are asking about final things.  The final resurrection and a new heaven and a new earth.  Jesus in the Gospel of Thomas is at times very different from the Jesus in the New Testament.  Here Jesus does not speak of a future rapture, Armageddon, or end times.  He says the ending and new beginning is already just cannot see it.  What does this mean?  I believe that he is saying that though you may feel imprisoned in the body and its limitations, and tired of this world's corrupt systems of control, you the real you is a spark of God.  The real You is limitless and free.  If you would realize this, you would experience the prison walls dissolving and the world of forms (kenoma) that seemed a prison is filled with the fullness.(pleroma)  Here Jesus speaks a lot like Buddhist and Hindu teachers.  He speaks in koans to challenge the listeners to think, to explore and to find out if what he says is true.  "Taste and see!" He whispers to us.  The Wisdom of God, Sophia, embodied in Jesus calls to us to embody her as well seeing the underlying oneness.
